When it comes to buying new tires, one of the first things you’ll encounter is a series of numbers and letters printed on the tire’s sidewall—something like 205/55R16. To most people, this might look like a confusing code, but it actually provides essential information about the tire's size, type, and performance capabilities.
In this blog, we’ll break down what these numbers mean and how to choose the right tire size for your vehicle.
Decoding a Tire Size (205/55R16)
205 – Tire Width (in millimeters)
R – Construction Type -: “R” stands for Radial, which is the most common tire construction today. It means the tire’s layers run radially across the tire.
16 – Rim Diameter (in inches) -: This tells you the size of the wheel (rim) the tire is designed to fit. A 16-inch tire won’t fit on a 17-inch rim.
55 – Aspect Ratio (as a percentage) -: This is the height of the tire’s sidewall as a percentage of the width. In this case, 55% of 205mm. A lower aspect ratio generally means better handling, while a higher one provides a smoother ride.
3. Other Tire Size Indicators
Depending on the tire, you may also see additional indicators:
-
XL – Extra Load: Designed to carry more weight.
-
LT – Light Truck: Built for heavier-duty vehicles.
-
P – Passenger: For standard vehicles.
-
M+S – Mud and Snow: Indicates all-season capability.
-
Run Flat – Can drive a limited distance after a puncture.
